Did you ever come very close to
meeting death? I did one March morning in 1958, flying a
Cessna 182 approaching Oklahoma City, west bound over Hara, Oklahoma
at 8000 feet. I flew into a thunder storm and lost radio
contact and encountering great turbulence. I, for a few
moments, lost control of my plane and got into severe down drafts
and the plane went into a "death spiral"; an extremely tight, steep
downward banking turn pulling about 3 g's and descending at a
very rapid rate of decent towards the ground. I had completely lost
all sense of orientation, the ground was coming up fast and suddenly
God took over and my reasoning kicked in and I pulled off all power,
neutralized the rudders and pulled back on the yoke and was able
to level out just 200 feet from ground zero.
That day God was my Co-Pilot. Was I
frightened? Not really at the moment for I was too busy trying to
live! After it was all over...Yes I was shaking like a leaf. I
almost left my wife to raise my son and daughter without a father. I
would have taken my beloved brother-in-law with me and we would have
met our Heavenly Father if I had gone down 200 more feet.
I would have missed so much. I would have only
had 10 years of service for my Savior. The 50 extra years God has
given me since
that day would never have been. The churches I have pastored, the
many hundreds I have seen take Christ into their lives, the
thousands I have preached to, the untold numbers that I have
witnessed to, the lives that may have been touched, the thrill of
writing my memoirs, From Despair to
Victory, would never have
happened.
A very long time friend said:
"I thought I knew you, Ben, until I read your
manuscript for your book. You have had a compelling and
thrilling life. God has used you mightily!"
Have you ever thought about what kind of
legacy you will leave behind when your time on earth is up?
"For to me to live is Christ, to die is gain." Phil. 1:21
